This is a difficult show to talk about because it was a difficult show. The civil war in Liberia was beyond imagining and this play shines a light on women who survivied, the women who fought, and the women who prayed. The musicians who worked underground were powerful and able to change hearts and minds. The culture of Liberia is beautiful and interesting, and I was glad to work with such powerful work.
However, it's a weird show to work on as a white woman who had to research a connection to the world of the play. And the whole design team was white, in a white town. And so it was difficult to be a part of a production that seemed to be so split.
